Reporte del VP de AES América Latina al "Board of Governors".

It is my pleasure to report that the Latin American Conference 2009 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, was a success. On May 26th through 28th, the Anhembi Parque (largest convention center in Latin America) has been the venue for a series of seminars, workshops and technical presentations, together with a large exhibition hall and a huge live sound demo space. The presentations were amazing, with speakers from all over Latin America but also from the US, Europe and Japan. We were truly honored with the presence of highly renowned professionals such as Kimio Hamasaki, Ron Streicher, Florian Camerer, Wes Dooley, John Storyk and Phil Ramone. People gratefully attended every seminar, from 20 minutes paper presentations to 5+ hours seminars like the one Ron Streicher and Wes Dooley did on the second day of the Conference.

We also organized the first Latin American Student Recording Competition, which had more than 60 entries from 6 countries (Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Uruguay and Venezuela) in different categories (Surround Classical & Non-Classical, Stereo Pop/Rock, Classical and Electronic). Finalists defended their work on stage and the members of the Jury were able to pick winners on each category, much like in the International Competitions. We had sponsoring from well known brands which offered valuable prizes for the winners of the Competition.

We (all the members of AES Brazil and myself) had a great deal of difficult issues to resolve and we all learned from them, so it was a very rich experience overall. I want to congratulate Joel Brito, Chairman AES Brazil, for chairing this event with all his passion and love for the AES. I also want to thank deeply all the guest speakers that came all the way down to give their time and share their knowledge, they really made this Conference a unique event that Latin America will treasure forever. Last but not least I´d like to thank the AES Brazil committee for their great work at all times, Marcela Zorro for coordinating the Recording Competition and Josh Tidsbury & Ezequiel Morfi for their generous help on web and FTP issues.

Since this is my last Latin American Conference as a VP, I hope that I have contributed to set a trend that will continue in the upcoming years with great educational events on a regional level in any part of the world, for the benefit of the entire Society.

With warmest regards.

Andrés Mayo
